Hollow Knight
Take control of a mysterious, silent knight as they explore the ruins of a lost kingdom and uncover the story of its demise...
I've never really cared for Metroidvanias or Souls-likes, yet I decided to try this game because of the low price tag. Easily one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Hollow Knight is a game with dark and grimey yet interesting environments where getting lost is actually fun. The combat is deceivingly simple in terms of controls, but the game contains a huge collection of bosses that are on the same level of difficulty of Dark Souls. Once you practice and learn each boss, it becomes extremely satisfying to defeat them with no damage taken.
All the other elements of the game are great as well: beautiful art, an unforgettable soundtrack, and tons of fascinating lore explained in a "show, don't tell" style. This game has easily made it into my top 10 favorites and feels like an absolute steal at 15$.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby and his friends get thrown into a new, mysterious land! Explore the abandoned region as you rescue Waddle Dees from a strange foe...
As much as I love Kirby, one of my biggest issues with the series in the 2010's was that most levels felt exactly the same in terms of design. As a result, none of them were very memorable. Kirby and the Forgotten Land does a great job fixing this issue, with every level having varying layouts and themes.
The game feels great to control. It feels as though HAL Laboratories focused on bringing Kirby into 3D without sacrificing much, and they succeeded. There aren't as many abilities as most Kirby games, but supposedly that was because the developers wanted to focus on the 3D aspect as much as possible. As consolation, you can upgrade abilities so that they're stronger, faster, and so that they act a bit differently from their base forms which is a fun spin on the formula.
In the end, this game is a good mixture of old Kirby traditions and new concepts, though I wish there was a bit more of the new. This is definitely one of Kirby's better experiences, especially in the past decade.
Hypnospace Outlaw
Hypnospace Outlaw is a simulator and somewhat of a puzzle game that lets you experience what the Internet was like in the 1990's.
Every night,
users can put on their Hypnospace Headbands and access Hypnospace, an Internet-like product that allows you to surf the net while they're asleep.
You play as a Hypnospace moderator and keep the interacting communities in line.
Hypnospace Outlaw is unlike any other game I've seen. None of the users in the game are real, but the way they're written makes them seem alive.
The way you piece together information and find secrets feels a lot like the real Internet and the bizarre yet fun ways people customize their pages
is a joy. The game isn't very long, but navigating everything at your own pace is encouraged and makes for a better experience. I can't wait for the sequel.
